Abstract. The experiments were conducted on two coloured Zantedeschia cultivars, ‘Black Eyed Beauty’ and ‘Treasure’, cultivated in different growing media: peat and peat with sand (5:1 and 2:1). Plants were drip irrigated (automatically controlled by “Watermark” sensors) at two soil suction levels –15 and –30 kPa. Irrigation at –30 kPa reduced tuber weight and flower quality expressed as: peduncle length, flower height and flower weight irrespectively of growing medium.

Growth and flowering of coloured calla lily as affected
by irrigation and growing media

Summary

The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the effects of irrigation at two soil suction levels
–15 and –30 kPa and different growing media on flower quality and tuber yield of Zantedeschia ‘Black Eyed Beauty’ and ‘Treasure’. For both cultivars irrigation at –30 kPa reduced flower quality expressed as peduncle length, flower height and weight irrespectively of the growing medium. Calla lily grew better in a well-drained medium as peat and peat with sand (5:1) and irrigated at –15 kPa.
